Setting Up Your LinkedIn

Picture
LinkedIn

It's the social media of the professional world! Scientists and scientific companies use LinkedIn to share their discoveries, advertise jobs and research opportunities, promote events and spread the latest science news. Science is inherently collaborative, and having a LinkedIn profile is a great way to connect with others in your field. It helps you stay in the loop with what’s happening in scientific communities, including in Adelaide, nationally and around the world.

Don’t wait until applying for internships or graduate positions to start your LinkedIn page. Getting started now is the best way to grow your profile over time, so that its ready-to-go when you need it.

Getting started is easy:
  • Add your current degree
  • Add any work experience, volunteer experience or awards
  • Upload a friendly, professional photo
  • Connect with people you know, or anyone here that you meet tonight!
Over time, you can find new connections, add to your bio and work towards adding new qualifications or experience.

Tips to Boost Your Profile
  • Follow companies, organisations or public figures that you’re interested in. To get you started:
    • Adelaide University Sciences Association ;)
    • University of Adelaide/Adelaide University
    • Science & Technology Australia
    • CSIRO
    • Search for discipline-specific companies

DID YOU KNOW?
The University of Adelaide offers FREE access to LinkedIn Learning courses to help you build your skills and qualifications? The university’s Career Services also offers LinkedIn profile workshops and even free professional headshots from time-to-time, so keep an eye out on their website!
  • Write an interesting bio that combines your experience with who you are as an individual. Authenticity is a sought-after quality!

  • Be inspired by your peers and professionals. It is a good idea to keep up-to-date with current happenings around the University and in your scientific disciple. Engage with posts that you like (note that your connections may see your post reactions and comments – keep it professional).

  • Join student clubs
    • Science clubs are the perfect way to meet likeminded individuals and make friends as well as building networks!
    • Volunteering on a committee is a great way to boost your workplace skills, make long-lasting connections and help your CV stand out. If you’re interested, stay tuned for our AGM in October where we will elect the 2026 AUScA committee!
    • But it's not just science clubs – whether your interests extend to rock climbing or swing dance, baking or chess, you might be surprised by what can arise from the people you know.
    • Many internship and job opportunities are posted on LinkedIn! The app may even recommend opportunities for you based on your profile and connections.
